Dana Point

Dana Point is a coastal city at the southern end of Orange County, defined by Dana Point Harbor and a run of beaches from Salt Creek south past Doheny. The city is currently in the middle of a major harbor redevelopment that is reshaping the waterfront core. Housing spans coastal bluff-top estates on the Monarch Beach and Headlands sides, more modest single-family blocks inland, and the older Capistrano Beach neighborhood on the southeast end.

Schools, amenities, and getting around.

Schools

Dana Point falls within Capistrano Unified School District. Elementary and middle boundaries shift by neighborhood — R.H. Dana Elementary, Del Obispo Elementary, and Palisades Elementary each serve portions of the city, feeding into Marco Forster Middle School and then Dana Hills High School for most Dana Point addresses. Verify the boundary for any specific home.

Amenities and access

Dana Point Harbor, Doheny State Beach (a longstanding California surfing landmark), Salt Creek Beach, and Strand Beach are the city's defining outdoor draws. Pacific Coast Highway is the main north-south spine, and the 5 freeway sits just inland. Metrolink and Amtrak service stops nearby in San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente, and the ongoing Dana Point Harbor Revitalization is expanding restaurant, retail, and marina capacity.

Common Questions

Buying or selling in Dana Point.

What buyers and sellers ask most often about Dana Point.

  • What is happening with the Dana Point Harbor redevelopment?
The Dana Point Harbor Revitalization is a multi-year overhaul of the harbor's commercial, marina, and public-realm spaces. It has meaningfully changed the harbor-adjacent experience during construction and will continue to for the next few years — worth factoring into decisions about harbor-view or harbor-walk-distance homes.
  • How is Monarch Beach different from the rest of Dana Point?
Monarch Beach is the northwest end of the city, developed later and around a resort and golf-course spine. It reads as more of a resort-adjacent enclave, with a heavier mix of gated communities and townhome/condo product than the older neighborhoods farther south.
  • Is Capistrano Beach part of Dana Point or San Clemente?
Capistrano Beach (often called Capo Beach) is part of Dana Point, on the southeast side toward the San Clemente border. It has a distinctly older beach-town character compared with the newer Monarch Beach end of the city.
  • Which schools serve Dana Point?
Dana Point is inside the Capistrano Unified School District. Most students eventually feed into Dana Hills High School. Elementary and middle boundaries shift by neighborhood, so confirm on the address.
  • What is the commute picture from Dana Point?
The 5 freeway sits just inland and is the primary regional route. Pacific Coast Highway is a slower but scenic north-south alternative. Metrolink and Amtrak service the nearby San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente stations for LA and San Diego trips.
