Lake Forest sits in central south Orange County, built around two private community lakes that gave the city its identity well before incorporation. The city absorbed the Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills master plans into its boundaries in the early 2000s, and Baker Ranch added a newer wave of construction on the northwest side. Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park and the Cleveland National Forest sit immediately to the east.

Lake Forest neighborhoods fall into three layers: the original 1960s and 1970s tracts around the two private lakes, the foothill master plans of Foothill Ranch and Portola Hills, and the newer Baker Ranch construction.

Schools
Most of Lake Forest is served by Saddleback Valley Unified School District, which also covers Mission Viejo and parts of Rancho Santa Margarita. A southern slice of the city falls within Capistrano Unified. El Toro High School and Trabuco Hills High School are the primary public high schools serving the city.
Amenities and access
Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park is the city's signature outdoor amenity, with the Cleveland National Forest immediately beyond. The Foothill Ranch Towne Centre and the Lake Forest Sports Park anchor retail and youth athletics. The 5 runs through the western side, with the 241 toll road providing fast access east toward the 91.
