Whittier

Whittier was founded by Quakers in 1887 and still carries one of the deepest historic housing inventories in southeast LA County. Uptown Whittier preserves late Victorian, Craftsman, and 1920s Spanish Revival homes, the city has designated historic districts under its Historic Resources Commission, and the foothill belt of Friendly Hills and East Whittier holds mid-century and custom hillside builds. Whittier College anchors the eastern edge of downtown.

Common Questions

Buying or selling in Whittier.

What buyers and sellers ask most often about Whittier.

  • What makes Whittier different from neighboring southeast LA County cities?
Whittier has a deep Quaker founding history, a true walkable historic downtown in Uptown, and city-designated historic districts that protect pre-war architecture. Most of the surrounding cities are post-war suburban builds without that historic fabric.
  • How do the historic district designations affect buyers?
Properties inside Hadley-Greenleaf, Central Park, and other designated districts are subject to Historic Resources Commission review for exterior changes. The review process protects character and resale character but does add a step on additions, windows, and roofing.
  • Why is La Serna High School such a draw?
La Serna High in Friendly Hills consistently posts strong GreatSchools and academic scores and pulls families specifically into the Friendly Hills, East Whittier City Elementary, and Lowell Joint feeders. Addresses inside the boundary command a measurable premium.
  • Is Whittier College a large presence in the city?
Whittier College is a small private liberal arts school on the east edge of Uptown. It is a steady but contained presence, and not an undergraduate-rental-heavy market like a UC town.
  • What does the foothill trail access look like?
The Hellman Park trailhead at the top of Greenleaf opens into roughly 4,000 acres of Puente Hills Preserve open space, with connecting trails to Arroyo Pescadero and the Schabarum and Powder Canyon networks. It is one of the largest accessible foothill systems in southeast LA County.
